Cercado,
Lima,
Peru
Dos
de Mayo Hospital
belongs to the
Ministry of Health,
and
its full name in Spanish
is "Benemerito
Hospital Nacional
Dos
de Mayo," or “Distinguished
May 2nd National
Hospital.”
The
date, May 2, has historical
relevance,
and refers to the last battle
at sea Peru had with Spain
in
1864, which established
its Independence.
The hospital has
been working since 1875
to care for
the health of
all underprivileged
Peruvians. It is located
in Lima’s
historic center,
and serves as a teaching
hospital
for the San Fernando
Medical School of San
Marcos
University, as well
as other medical schools.
People from all over the country
come to this center,
looking
to restore their health. The
impact of terrorism
on the
economy has greatly diminished
the hospital’s
health care capacities. Nevertheless,
a dedicated group
of physicians
tend to the
medical and surgical diseases
of children and adults
at the Hospital
Dos de Mayo.
Before 1999, there was no Cardiovascular and
Thoracic Surgery facility in this 850-bed teaching hospital,
so PCTCV started their unit from scratch.
The historic hospital Dos de Mayo has the honor
of
being
the
burial
place
of
a
Peruvian
National
Hero,
medical
student, Daniel
Alcides
Carrión.
